In a mist-locked kingdom afflicted by dark magic, Elspeth Spindle survives with the aid of an ancient, unpredictable spirit she calls the Nightmare, who dwells in her mind and guards her secrets. After a chance encounter with a mysterious highwayman on a forest road—revealed to be the King's own nephew and Captain of the Destriers—she is drawn into a perilous quest to collect twelve Providence Cards said to hold the cure for the kingdom's affliction, with a deadline of the Solstice. As their attraction grows alongside the danger, Elspeth must confront the possibility that the Nightmare is gradually taking control of her mind.
