The ninth entry in Anne Bishop's Black Jewels series, this collection gathers four novellas set in the world of the Blood. In the first, Daemon, the Black-Jeweled Warlord Prince of Dhemlan, navigates his first year of marriage to his Queen, Jaenelle, while hosting his extended family during a thirteen-day winter celebration. A second story follows Surreal as she returns to Ebon Rih and confronts a challenge to her family's rule. A third centers on a trap laid for Queen Sylvia and her sons and the hunt for an unidentified warlord. The final piece turns to Daemon in his later role as High Lord of Hell as he confronts grief and the possibility of a new connection.
