After being forcibly turned into a vampire and sentenced to death for killing the prince who turned her, Mische is offered an alternative to execution: accompany Asar, the scarred bastard prince of the House of Shadow, on a perilous journey to the underworld to resurrect the god of death. In secret, her sun god commands her to betray Asar and kill the death god instead.
