In a land divided by an ancient war between the immortal realm of Starside and the mortal realm of Stormside, challengers compete every fifty years for access to a pool of powerful magic. Aris, an orphaned blacksmith's apprentice, enters not for the magic but for vengeance against the gods who destroyed her family. She must first survive the king's deadly selection competition, then navigate the perils of Starside, where she cannot trust anyone—least of all a mysterious king's guard from her past. Aris carries a secret connected to her family's death.
