Set during the Jazz Age in southern Mexico, this historical fantasy follows Casiopea Tun, a young woman who cleans her wealthy grandfather's house while dreaming of an independent life. When she opens a mysterious wooden box, she accidentally frees the spirit of the Mayan god of death, who enlists her aid in reclaiming his throne from his treacherous brother. Their quest takes them from the jungles of Yucatán to Mexico City and into the Mayan underworld, drawing on Mexican history and Mayan mythology.
