The fifth entry in Anne Bishop's Black Jewels saga is a collection of connected novellas set in a realm ruled by the Blood, a magical society whose power is marked by colored Jewels. The stories expand on the world's most powerful Witch, Jaenelle, and the warriors bound to her: Saetan, who trains and adopts her; Lucivar, the winged warlord who serves as her protector; and Daemon, destined as her consort. Among its threads are the origin of the Jewels, a romance between Lucivar and a hearth witch, a conflict between Saetan and a Priestess, and the question of a future for Jaenelle and Daemon.
