In the final installment of this urban fantasy series, the antagonist Sebastian Morgenstern wages war on the Shadowhunters, using the Infernal Cup to transform them into monstrous Endarkened soldiers and swell the ranks of his army. As the Nephilim retreat to their homeland of Idris and find even their defenses tested, a group including Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Simon, and Alec is forced to flee, undertaking a journey that leads into the demon realms where no human has survived. The battle for the fate of the world comes at great personal cost.
